The Arizona Branch of the International Dyslexia Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the specific learning disability, dyslexia.
The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) was founded in 1949 in memory of Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a distinguished neurologist who did pioneering work in identifying and treating dyslexia. The IDA is the oldest learning disabilities organization in the nation. Formed in 1984, the Arizona Branch of the IDA is a very active organization with diverse membership. Through our conferences, website and newsletter (Code Breaker), we provide up to date information about dyslexia and literacy research, conferences, local service providers, training opportunities and other events. We maintain a telephone hotline as an immediate resource for those who need it.
Membership in the local branch is included in the cost of IDA membership. If you are one of the many people affected by dyslexia - recent estimates place the dyslexic population at one in five - or if you have a family involvement or service involvement, we urge you to join the IDA and the Arizona Branch and become an active participant.

Arizona Branch of IDA Reaches Out to PODS
It’s not always easy for people without dyslexia to understand what these students experience. PODS invited representatives of the International Dyslexia Association to the school April 12 to allow parents and others to undergo a simulation...
Moving about the room, it was obvious to see the mounting confusion, frustration and exasperation. They were getting it: this is the challenge dyslexic students go through each day.
Considering that about one in 10 students is dyslexic, it has staggering implications.
Two members of the Arizona State Legislature and a representative of Gov. Jan Brewer were on hand to experience the dyslexia simulation as well. Sen. Thayer Verschoor and Rep. Laurin Hendrix, both of District 22, and Karla Phillips, education policy advisor to Gov. Brewer, took part in the lively discussion that followed the demonstration.
Verschoor said it was a frustrating experience.
“What legislative help do you need?”
he asked. “Help us understand. How can we make it do-able with the
limited resources that we have?”

Thank you for making our spring forum on Dyslexia a success!
At this well attended workshop, the Arizona Branch of the International Dyslexia Association was encouraged to find that what we are doing is making a difference. Once again the presentations gave valuable insight into what Dyslexia looks like from different perspectives, and what we can do about it. Wonderful questions from the attendees made it easy to discuss options for what parents and teachers should be doing over the summer months to help students return to school in the fall.
